BBA StarGame: The first 48 hours

On 7 May 2012, fans across the African continent and abroad got ready to welcome a new set of housemates in to the Big Brother Africa house.

It wasn't long before viewers came to understand the lay of the land: housemates doubled up with partners in Downville, while Upville, a separate house entirely, accommodated some of the continent’s celebs.

With cameras capturing their every move, it was unclear who would walk out as the winner after 91 days, but the first few hours revealed exactly what kind of personalities we could come to expect from some of the housemates.

After host IK Osakioduwa welcomed the all new motley crew and ushered them into the place they would call home for three months (for the lucky ones anyway), it was Goldie who took the lead in Upville, showing the rest of the gang through the garden and into their house.

Her bubbly personality shone and it was clear she was going to be easy to get along with as she introduced herself to Barbz and Mampi.

Everyone loved her big smile - the tears only came much later - but viewers were not shy to say how they felt about her eyelashes. In one word: no!

Love for Goldie persisted even after her eviction, and it's safe to say the continent mourned her passing in February, as tributes poured in from all over Africa, and beyond.

Namibia's eccentric Lady May on the other hand did not get off to a great start, with her Upville housemates thinking she was rude and spoilt.

Her quirks entertained the viewers who were relieved that she wasn’t voted out through the series - the starlet made it to the final - so they could shake their heads at what she did next?

From exercising in her trusty pink heels to playing a game of Solitaire against herself and even sleeping in the garden on a series of very cold nights, Lady May was definitely one of a kind during StarGame.

It was a different story in Downville – with 28 housemates, viewers couldn’t expect anything other than double the drama.

In their first few hours in the house, four Downville housemates (Hildia, Julio, Teclar and Maneta) were up for eviction.

While they questioned the random nomination (yes, there were lots of tears), it was Nigeria’s Chris who showed his optimistic side, trying to calm down the nominees and telling them everything was going to work out.

He even started to sing and began tossing tequila - in honour of Big Brother of course. He once more showed his supportive side when his teammate Ola asked to be evicted from the house, for medical reasons. Chris stood by his friend saying: "Yes, this is a game. However, we can’t play with our lives".

Zimbabwe’s Teclar had what one can call princess tendencies from the get go! Within hours of the show’s launch she had recruited servants, willing and able to cater to almost all her needs (Maneta, Lee and Luke).

Teclar wasn’t very "princessy" after a fight with her sister Maneta turned sour and her tendencies didn’t find favour with the audience either as she was voted out after seven days.

So much entertainment in the Big Brother house, and we’re only talking about the first 48 hours.

Remember, Big Brother Africa S8 launches on Sunday, 26 May at 20:00. Tune in to AfricaMagic Entertainment or DStv Channels 197 and 198 to catch all the excitement.
