Many guests had complained that the water hadn’t been running properly and it had tasted funning in recent days. The body in the tank was that of Canadian tourist Elisa Lam, 21, who disappeared on February 1. Currently police are trying to work out whether it was “a very, very strange accident” that Elisa Lam died and ended up in the water tank or whether foul play was involved. A maintenance worker found the body on Tuesday whilst investigating the water complaints from guests.
Because of the location of the tank, it was very difficult for officials to remove the body and they spent much of the day trying to do so. Police spokeswoman Sara Faden said: “The location of the water tanks is very small and configured in a very tight way, so it’s a little more difficult to get the body out.”
Tests on the water show that there were no biohazard concerns and other water tanks were not connected.  One of the guests staying in the hotel Michael, from the UK said: “The moment we found out, we felt a bit sick to the stomach, quite literally, especially having drank the water, we’re not well mentally.”
His wife Sabrina added: “The water did have a funny taste. We never thought anything of it. We thought it was just the way it was here.”
The Cecil Hotel s located in downtown LA, which is near Skid Row, an area known for its problems with drug addiction and homelessness. Police are still trying to piece together what happened to Miss Lam, who was from Vancouver, British Columbia, had travelled to California alone on January 27 and was last seen by staff at the hotel on January 31. She had been in touch with her family daily until she disappeared; police stated at the time she disappeared that it was suspicious. Hotel CCTV had shown Miss Lam acting strangely, hiding in a corner and repeatedly peering around the lift doors into the hallway.
